Key stuck in the ignition, hard to turn, or turning without starting anything? Worn ignition cylinders are a common cause. We repair the cylinder on site when we can, which is often less costly than replacing it.

When you might need ignition repair
- The key is hard to turn or stuck
- The steering wheel lock won't release
- The key turns without starting anything
Repair vs. replacement
- Repair: worn wafers or a sticking cylinder that can be serviced
- Replacement: cylinder spins freely or was damaged in a theft attempt. See ignition replacement.
Try this first
- Turn the steering wheel gently while turning the key (it may be locked)
- Make sure the car is in Park
- Don't force the key; a broken key creates a second problem. If it snaps, see broken car key extraction.
Is it the key or the ignition?
A badly worn key can feel like an ignition problem. If a spare key turns smoothly, the original key likely needs ignition key replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can you fix an ignition without replacing it?
Often yes, if the cylinder can be serviced. We'll tell you after inspecting it.
Is ignition repair an electrical job?
We handle the mechanical lock cylinder. Starter or wiring faults need an auto mechanic, and we'll say so if that's the issue.
