When you might need car key replacement
- Your key is lost, stolen or worn out
- The key turns poorly or won't turn
- You need a spare before something goes wrong
Which type of car key do you have?
- Basic metal key: cut only, common on older vehicles.
- Transponder key: a chip in the head must be programmed to the immobilizer. See transponder key programming.
- Laser-cut key: a milled groove instead of teeth. See laser-cut car keys.
- Remote-head key or fob: buttons for locks and trunk. See key fob replacement.
- Smart or proximity key: push-button start. See smart key programming.
Replacing a key when you still have one vs. when all are lost
If you still have a working key, the job is usually a straightforward copy, which we cover under car key duplication. If no working key exists, a new key has to be generated from the VIN or by decoding the lock. That process is explained on our all keys lost page.
How replacement is done on site
- Confirm ownership with ID and registration or title.
- Identify the key blank and chip type from the year, make, model and VIN.
- Cut the blade by code or by decoding the door or ignition lock.
- Program the chip or remote, then test starting, locking and the trunk.
Limitations to know
Some manufacturers restrict key programming to their dealers, especially on certain newer or luxury models. Call with your VIN and we'll tell you up front if your vehicle falls into that group.

Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a car key without the original?
Often yes. With verified ownership, many keys can be cut from the VIN or the lock and then programmed, even when no original exists.
Is a locksmith different from going to the dealer?
A mobile locksmith comes to the vehicle. A dealer typically needs the car brought in and may order the key. Our guide on locksmith vs. dealership compares both.
Will my old key still work after replacement?
If the old key was lost or stolen, we can usually remove it from the vehicle's memory so it can no longer start the car.
